Spiritual direction is an ancient practice of spiritual companionship where two people meet in order to pay attention to inner life of one person. Spiritual direction starts with the assumption that the Divine is alive and active in our lives, even when it doesn’t feel like it. We also assume that God, who is love, is always calling us to deeper relationship with Godself and our true self. Accordingly, spiritual directors help you notice and respond to God’s movement and your own deep desires in your life.
We do not need to walk our spiritual journey alone. Spiritual direction creates a safe space to explore your spiritual journey. The journey can get rough and lonely at times — especially when the faith practices that had worked for you in the past no longer feel meaningful. Many of us need an outside person to talk to and walk with during transitions in faith. We need to be able to honestly ask “where is God?” and “what do I actually want?” When our journeys seem to have stagnated or when the Divine seems to move in us, spiritual direction can help us more fully notice and respond to God and our true selves.
Spiritual direction is not about problem-solving, and the director is not there to give answers. Instead, the director is a faithful companion to help you look honestly at your relationship with your self and with God. The director may suggest new ways of praying and connecting, or new spiritual practices to try. The practice is based on a deep trust that the God’s spirit dwells in us and is already at work in us.
Whether you can tangibly feel Divine love right now, or whether you’ve been stuck in a dark space, spiritual direction can be a gift to help you stay present to your journey. If you need a safe place to explore your deep fears about God, your questions about God’s leading in your life, your new experiences of God, or the fact that you aren’t experiencing much of anything from God right now, spiritual direction can provide that.
In spiritual direction sessions, we will talk about how you are (or aren’t) experiencing God or Divine connection in your life right now. Without judgment or pressure, we will look at the images you have of God and yourself. We will sometimes spend guided periods of attentive silence together.
Spiritual direction can help us live with deeper freedom, align with our values and inner knowing, and do whatever work is ours to do.
